Click here to view all obituariesIt was 30 years ago that I met Mr. Donald, my senior year at VTHS. I remember my classmates who had been under the direction of two others prior and I were wondering if this "New Guy" would be as great we were promised that he would be. Mr. Donald walked into the theater as we were about to begin auditions for Back County Crimes, and he lept up on stage (like he had wings and did so many other times). I think it was at that moment and him giving us his vision of what the theatre should be that we felt safe and this was going to be special. He had a way with each of us, knowing what to say, believing in us and what we could do, and never did he degrade us of our promise. His direction, candor, love, support and inspiration has come across to more students in past and present.
I know, for me, he made me feel safe - enough to actually walk out onto stage for my first musical, The Sound Of Music. I also returned to his theatre after graduating to earn credits from William Paterson University to student direct a scene in the show Applause. I received an "A" from my professor, as she had made it to one of the shows and knew that this was special. But my greatest gift in this added credential was learning from a great man, and understanding what it takes to deal with so many different personalities of students as a leader, and mentor.
We called him "Duck", and I loved and respected him. Mrs. Donald, Stephanie, Faith and Miriam you all know how special he was and he will remain that way in your hearts. I only wish that peace is with you and the rest of the family and all those who's heart he also touched.
I had a button that said, "If ALL The World Was a Stage, I Want Better Lighting,", with Mr. Donald's sets, lighting and how he put together students who became leading and supporting roles, our lighting was all due to him. And my light has been dimmed out of respect for him. "HAIL, DUCK", may PEACE be yours and hopefully you have your light being shown on you to know the light you've shown on all of us.
With love,
Cindy
