Obituary for Margriet Maria Carrico (Vander Heyden)

Margriet Maria Carrico (Vander Heyden)
Margriet Carrico of Hamburg N.J. passed away at age 74 on Friday April 21, 2017, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. What a Life…. Born on November 5, 1942, in Gladbeck Germany during the height of the Second World War, Margriet Vanderheyden moved to the United States at the age of sixteen; she met and married her first and beloved husband John Thys, who predeceased her in 1971. The next two years, Margriet doted on her three children Sander, Jeannine and Saskia; she then met the second great love of her life, John D. Carrico and together they shared the next 42 years of their lives together. As the two families blended into one, Margriet raised seven beautiful children while also maintaining a reputation amongst the art community as an expert in her field.

A weaver of distinction, Margriet was a member of local guilds; Associated Hand Weavers, Jockey Hollow Weavers, and Frances Irwin Hand Weavers. She was a member of the national organizations; Hand Weavers Guild of America, Complex Weavers, and the by-invitation-only Cross Country Weavers. Her work was juried into exhibitions and walked runways. Margriet won local and national awards, including "Best in Show" at Convergence Atlanta 1998 for her hand woven wedding dress that her daughter Jeannine wore, and most recently, a second scholarship to Peter's Valley School of Craft. Margriet was a leader and well-respected member of the hand weaving community where she inspired and encouraged generations of weavers. Her teaching knew no bounds as she mentored not only her daughters and grandchildren in her craft, but many others who strove to emulate her talent.

Margriet was also pre-deceased by her beloved husband John and daughter Jeannine during 2016. She is survived by her children, John D. Carrico II and his wife, Laura Lee, of Mountain Lakes, NJ, Kathy Gaiser and her husband, Steve, of Butler, NJ, Sander Thys and his wife, Janice, of Denville, NJ, Son-in-law, Chris Niehoff, of Wantage, NJ, Grace Wolfe of West Milford, NJ, Saskia Kane and her husband, David, of LaPlata, MD, and Mary Christine Conners of Newark, DE, as well as19 cherished grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Relatives and friends will be received on Friday, May 5th 2017, from 4-8 p.m. at the Our Lady of Magnificat R.C. Church, 2 Miller Road, Kinnelon, N.J. and are also invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial Service on Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Magnificat R.C. Church. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home, Vernon. For condolences and directions see www.fergusonfuneralhomesnj.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Fighting Children's Cancer Foundation http://fccf.info.
