Obituary for Paul James Corbutt
Highland Lakes: Paul James Corbutt, of Highland Lakes, NJ died peacefully at home on Thursday the 11th of January, after a short illness. He was recently pre-deceased by Patricia, his wife of 62 years.
Paul was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1932. He attended St Paul of the Cross Grammar School, graduated from Holy Family High School and attended Seton Hall University. He served in the Air Corps and was discharged as a corporal to attend infantry school. He graduated from Infantry Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. At the end of the Korean Conflict he went into active reserves and was a company commander in the National Guard.
Paul met his wife Patricia at his sister Mary Frances' wedding in 1954. After marrying Pat in 1955 they lived in the three-family home on Palisade Avenue. Much love and laughter could be found there, as the four Corbutt children and five Branagan cousins grew up together, along with their parents and grandparents. After summering in Highland Lakes for a number of years the Corbutt's moved to "the Lake" year round in 1971.
After beginning a career in the printing industry at Alco Gravure in Hoboken, NJ, Paul also worked at International Paper Company, before retiring from JC Penney's Corporate office in NYC, where he earned the privilege of Partnership.
After his retirement Paul discovered his love of cruising. He and his late wife Patricia spent many hours at Captain's Club Cruises in Middletown, NY, planning their next trip. Together they visited many wonderful places, returning often to Bermuda where they had honeymooned in 1955.
He loved spending time with his seven grandchildren, Richard, Connor, Theresa, Liam, Maggie, Owen and Kieran, especially taking them out to eat, fixing them meals and watching Wheel of Fortune together.
Paul is survived by his sister Mary Sheridan of Toms River, NJ; daughter, Catherine Brennan and her husband, William of Middletown, NY, daughter Lillian Ryder and her husband, Richard of Ridgefield, NJ, daughter, Frances Rumsey of Highland Lakes, NJ, son, Paul G. Corbutt and his wife Veronica of Pompton Plains, NJ, his seven grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for both Paul and Patricia will be held Saturday January 20, 2018 at 11:00AM at Our Lady of Fatima RC Church in Highland Lakes. Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 3-7PM at Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home 241 Rt. 94 (GPS use 1 Vanderhoof Ct.) Vernon.
